Breaking the Rules
Meditation frustrates people because it’s hard to know if they’re doing it “right”. While there are some basic guidelines that many meditation teachers recommend, they can be altered to fit your personality and schedule. Here are the answers to some common beginner questions:
How long? As long a time as possible, says Fouset. “I ask students, ‘How much time do you have? 20 minutes? 15 minutes? Or just five minutes?” commit to what you can. I knew a woman who kept a meditation cushion on her bed as a convenient reminder. Sometimes, she would just sit for 15 seconds. The point is that she did what she could.”
How often? Try to devote some time every day to meditation. Miss a day? Forget about it and begin again. You sit regularly for 20 minutes, and today you only have five minutes? No problem. It’s better to meditate for 5 minutes a day than one-half hour only on Sunday,” says Foust.
