What does alone time accomplish?
The most important relationship you will ever have is the one you create with yourself. How can you be a good friend to a stranger? You can’t. Self-esteem and self-acceptance are dictated by how well you know yourself. If you don’t talk to, listen to, and give to yourself, it’s easy to forget who you are. If you don’t check in, your internal dialogue—what you say to yourself every minute of every day—will run on automatic.
Are you saying and believing things that add to yourself-worth? Are you pausing to give yourself credit for new values you’ve developed? Are the labels you’ve created for yourself outdated? That’s where alone time comes in. it can be an incredible process of rediscovery.
I’m taking to myself here unless you can cross the threshold that allows you to say sincerely, “I don’t feel guilty for taking care of me.” You have to really believe that you’re not being selfish, egotistic, or negligent of others. You must admit that you need this and then claim it. -Phillip C. McGraw, PhD
