Living Well – 5

Sight

Did you know that?

Because of the way light rays are bent when they enter the eye, images form upside down.  The brain makes sense of the signals and flips the images upright.

It’s been a great decade for eyes.  Advances in glaucoma prevention (scientists now know that early intervention to lower pressure can slow the damage), cataract surgery (a much-shortened procedure), and laser surgery have restored vision to millions.

To enrich your sense of sight

Take a multivitamins with 70 mg zinc and 0.4 mg of lutein, which may help prevent macular degeneration.

Relax your eyes with this move.  Roll a paper into a tube.  Hold the tube over one eye, keeping both eyes open. Place your other hand against the edge, in front of your nose. Soften your gaze, until you see a hole in your hand.

Wear 100 percent UV-blocking sunglasses, remove all eye makeup at night, and clean contact lenses.  One worry you can toss away:  Reading in the dark and sitting too close to the TV will not reduce vision or cause nearsighetdness.
